Well, it's almost time for me to head off to Australia. Tomorrow, actually, but this might be my last chance to get in a blog before then. I will try to blog while there but won't promise. Christmas is over and it was quite a pleasant one. My son visited from Las Vegas and he said he had a good time. It looks like he is set on going back to college full time to qualify as an accountant. He did one class last semester and got an A, so it looks like he should do OK in that field. He has quite a bit of money coming to him for education from the time he spent in the United States Air Force; at least enough for about two years of college. We spent Christmas Eve morning at my wife's parents then headed to Pensacola Beach, Florida to where my wife's sister and family live. Lots of gifts were handed around and we all ate and drank too much.

The media had a nice tidy chat with the head coach and a half-dozen players from the most boring locker room in sports. That's exactly how their head man, Bill Belichick, wants it, of course. Truth be told, Giants coach Tom Coughlin would just as soon his team say a lot about nothing, as well. But the Giants, unlike New England, must defend themselves from the doubters. Six days from the big game, fresh from the skies, Big Blue began playing defense. The great escape – or perhaps it is just a gigantic shopping spree
It may have been the biggest shopping spree in history. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, running out of the bare necessities, swarmed out of Gaza into Egypt yesterday to buy everything they could lay their hands on after Hamas militants blew up a huge metal border wall. They returned herding goats, sheep, heifers and camels, riding on donkey carts laden with sacks of cement, or festooned with cans of petrol strapped to their bodies, after militants brought Israel’s siege of the coastal territory to a halt, dismantling the 40ft-high (12m) barrier like a broken concertina. Old women lugged heavy cans of olive oil and children stumbled under the weight of packs of powdered milk, passing even more of the besieged masses still rushing through the gaping breaches to stock up on the basics.
