Chinatrust mortgage loans hit P1.2B in end-Sept

Chinatrust Commercial Bank Corp. said Monday it posted a significant growth in its retail mortgage loans, driven by high take-up of its Cashback Mortgage product.

In a statement, the bank president Joey Bermudez said Chinatrust's mortgage loan portfolio hit P1.22 billion as of end-September, higher than the P940 million recorded in the same period last year.

Bermudez said the bank's Cashback Mortgage product has been popular with high net worth individuals and businessmen because it cuts their interest expense while they maintain their savings or current accounts with Chinatrust.

Under this arrangement, the amount placed under deposit is deducted from the aggregate loan amount when determining the interest rate to be charged on the loan.

Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure

Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting.

I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK.

Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little?

'Fro-yo' frenzy hits the Chicago market

A healthy, tart-tasting frozen yogurt is winding its way into the Chicago area.

After making a huge splash on the East and West coasts, the hip product resembling soft-serve ice cream is set to debut in this market over the next several months.

The frozen yogurt is different than the trendy TCBYs of 1980s in that the new mix actually tastes like yogurt and is healthy. The product set to bombard this area will feature live yogurt cultures, or probiotics, said to aid the digestive process and fight disease. Many are low or nonfat and have very little sugar. Fresh fruit is blended in or drizzled on top.

A handful of entrepreneurs are in the process of offering the fresh treat just as big companies are set to debut at area shopping centers. Red Mango and Pinkberry are big players based in Southern California, where competition is tough.

These include: New licence obligations for television and radio broadcasters which will hold broadcasters directly responsible for consumer protection and PRS compliance. This obligation will ensure fair and consistent treatment for all those participating in programmes, such as entering competitions and voting. Also, Ofcom outlined a requirement for television and radio broadcasters to ensure independent third party verification of PRS activity. This will help ensure early detection of compliance issues.

Mirror, Mirror: Taking a chance on luxe

Sisters Kia Wongus and Tania Toomer were in their prime shopping years when bling was king, and folks didn't think twice about spending a grand on a handbag. So the Mount Airy identical twins, along with friend Vanessa L. Hall, planned to open a space catering to women with the same upscale urban tastes. Their target date: fall 2007. Yet the closer they got to their November opening, the dimmer the economic picture grew. Gas prices escalated, mortgage loans collapsed. Consumers everywhere tightened their grip on their wallets as the R-word - recession - reentered the country's vocabulary. All that, coupled with poor womenswear sales during fall and a lackluster holiday shopping season, meant the ladies couldn't have picked a worse time to open Manayunk's Totally Posh Boutique. "We know. We know.

Hot spill inspired mouldmaker's new business line

Instead of crying over spilled coffee, Joe Cappellino has done something about it.

The 42-year-old Windsor-area mouldmaker has designed a sturdy container to carry takeout beverage trays. Anyone who's ever mopped up a car seat or carpet after a flimsy paper tray has spilled can appreciate his Traybilizer.

It has grips that keep it from sliding, an indentation for catching spills and two large spaces for placing your thumbs for a better hold.
