Could a mall be coming to Crestview?

Word of a possible shopping center in Crestview spawns the usual questions. What stores? What restaurants? Where at? How soon? A Crestview City Council workshop Monday tried to answer this question: "How do we pay for it?" A development agency hoping to build a shopping, dining and entertainment destination in Crestview says it will take a team effort to make the project a reality. Land Capital Group made a presentation prior to the regular Crestview City Council meeting requesting an economic development partnership between the developer, the city and Okaloosa County. "Think of this as a local economic stimulus package," Scott Davison of Land Capital Group told the council. "We know people in Crestview would love to see something like this, but without help from you, it’s not possible." The council approved a consent agenda motion to authorize city representatives to approach the county to discuss the project.

BREC trail plan advances

The East Baton Rouge Parish Recreation and Park Commission gave conceptual approval Thursday to a plan to develop a 12-foot-wide bike and walking trail from the Mall of Louisiana to the Siegen Lane Marketplace.

Ted Jack, BREC’s director of Planning and Engineering, said property owners have already given approval for the 2.8-mile trail that would wind along Ward’s Creek between two of Baton Rouge’s busiest shopping areas.

"This proposal would allow people to bike or walk to work or to shopping areas. The path could become a destination itself," Jack told BREC.

Jack said Richard Carmouche, developer of The Grove, has offered to provide right-of-way access for the trail through a public-private partnership.

In addition, the BREC gave the green light Thursday for Jack to pursue talks with landowners about building a trail along Dawson’s Creek that would tie into the Ward’s Creek path, and allow access to Perkins Rowe and the Bluebonnet Village Shopping Center.

Retailers limit purchases of designer handbags

For products that are truly in demand, like Wii game consoles, tickets to the Super Bowl or cans of Niblets corn on double-coupon day, it may seem reasonable to limit the number a customer can buy at one time.

But readers of the fine print on the Web sites of luxury retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman may be surprised to discover that such a policy also now applies to designer handbags.

These include Prada's latest ruched nylon styles, which cost $1,290; Bottega Veneta's signature woven leather hobos, at $1,490; and the new rectangular Yves Saint Laurent clutch that looks like a postcard addressed to the designer (with a $1,395 stamp).

"Due to popular demand," potential shoppers are warned, "a customer may order no more than three units of these items every 30 days."

Popular, the bags may be.

Holly tipped to cover up?

Holly Willoughby's latest raunchy outfit seems to have upset Dancing On Ice viewers, but eager punters have apparently started betting on what she'll wear next week.

The 26-year-old presenter's low-cut cream and silver number was so revealing, it sparked a flood of complaints from disgruntled ice fans, so Sky Bet are offering odds of 8/1 that she'll cover up on Sunday's show with a polo neck.

But it's slightly less likely that Holly will defy her critics by hosting the show in a bikini (50/1) and only a 100/1 chance that she suffers a Janet Jackson style wardrobe malfunction and flashes a nipple.

Sky Bet's Helen Jacobs said: "Holly's dress was the main talking point of last week's show so all eyes will be on her decolletage on Sunday!"

It isn't the first time Holly's been in trouble for revealing too much.

Rename Kalahari before it gets here

That's right, you haters are nothing but low-rent racists, who are implying that the non-white people of Bragg Hill or immigrants who aren't white anglo-saxon protestants are all illegal, dirty or in need of a shower. Take your white supremacy and move to Arkansas, it's full of ignorant white Wal-Mart shopping morons like you people. .

Business Briefs

Centro Properties Group, the Australian owner of US malls that put itself up for sale, said it failed to extend interest rate hedges on its debt.

Changes to interest rates may cut earnings because Centro was unable to continue the hedges it had on about half of borrowings made in Australian dollars and in US dollars, the Melbourne-based company said in a statement on Thursday.

"This has increased Centro's exposure to interest rate movements and could translate into volatility in Centro's earnings if interest rates rise or fall significantly," the statement said.

Centro, which owns 700 US malls, invited buyers for the company or its assets after its market value plunged A$4.1 billion (US$3.6 billion) over two days last month.

The company was the worst casualty in Asia of the global credit squeeze.
