Nuclear Power Gets Boost from Candidates
The near-meltdown at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island in 1979 and the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine brought a dramatic halt to the nuclear industry's expansion plans in the United States. More than 100 nuclear reactors generate 20% of the nation's electricity, and the last completed plant was ordered in 1973. American nuclear power got a boost in 2001 when Vice President Dick Cheney's energy plan called for it to become "a major component" of the nation's electricity supply — as it is in France and Japan. When President Bush signed the latest energy bill into law this month, he said: "If we're serious about making sure we grow our economy and deal with greenhouse gases, we have got to expand nuclear power." This fiscal year alone, more than $1 billion in federal research and development spending was devoted to nuclear-power research, far more than any other source of electricity.

Giving it everything
He went to work at 4am once to see if it was cooler, but the temperature never dropped below 38ûC in that room. Dean worked as a logistician for Goal, a Dublin-based international aid agency. Goal does disaster relief and social development programmes. It doesn't do air-conditioning. After weeks of intense build-up, Dean would watch clouds forming overhead, swelling until they burst with the phenomenal biblical rains of the wet season. Overnight the temperature would plummet 20ûC, torrents of water bouncing off the earth, drenching the clay-like soil, creating rivers of mud in which the wheels of his car would simply spin helplessly. It puts rush-hour traffic on the M8 into perspective. Or that irritating computer glitch at work. Add the fact that Dean was working in a voluntary capacity, with only a basic allowance instead of a wage, and his employment choices become even more interesting.

The alewives are among some of the plentiful fish in the world. They are found along the Atlantic Coast from Canada to Florida and are 6" to 15" long, The word alewife means wife of a tavern keeper, and I can't find any historical information on the etymology of this word. While they live in the ocean most of the time, in the Spring the fish return to the fresh water where they were born so they can spawn. The journey from the ocean to their spawning places is made along a herring run. The Brewster run is from the sea, along "natural ladders" in a brook, to a mill pond. There is also a man- made run in Bournedale and one in Harwich. The female alewife, after spawning, lays up to 100,000 eggs which sink into a pond, clinging to rocks, and eventually hatch a few days later.
