Trumbull school board signs personnel pact

The board's unanimously approved new pact runs from July 2006 through June 2010. Floyd Dugas, the lawyer who negotiated the contract, said Local 1303-34 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 4, experienced changes in both its staff representative and local leadership that complicated talks.

He said cafeteria workers, who are under the same leadership, have now begun their discussions for a contract to succeed the pact that also expired in 2006.

The custodians' agreement covers 55 workers. Their raises will alternate from 3 percent to 3.25 percent annually over its four years, resulting in payment for most building workers of $21.81 to $23.99 hourly over the course of the contract.

So there is quite a lot of apprehension on both sides about what will transpire when Britain's new Prime Minister and America's decaying President have their first proper date. In the nightmare scenario which terrifies diplomats, the two men will find they have nothing in common except their initials. Brown will invite the President to agree to his grand plan for eradicating world poverty; Bush will respond by asking the Prime Minister to sign up to the nuking of Iran. Even if their talks are perfectly amicable, there will be long shadows on the walls of the log cabins in the Catoctin mountains of Maryland. There will be the shades of conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq. And there will be the ghost of Tony Blair. Both the GBs had an intensity of relationship with TB that neither will ever have with each other.

Employment Appears to Gain This Month

Nonfarm private employment grew 130,000 from December 2007 to January 2008, according to the report. Employment was spurred by service-sector growth, which grew by 141,000. Manufacturing employment flattened after 18 months of declines, and employment in the goods-producing sector fell 11,000.

The real estate decline again weighed on the construction and financial services sectors. Construction employment, in its 14th straight month of decline, fell by 13,000. Since the high in August 2006, construction jobs have fallen by 215,000. Employment in financial activities, which had showed strong growth during the real estate boom, increased only 1,000.

But these numbers should be viewed with caution: ADPs numbers have been rosier than the Bureau of Labor Statistics establishment survey.

Israel Reflects On New York 9/11, Gaza and Katrina

Jerusalem---September 11.....That hurt. That really hurt. Writing that date line. One for which many of us dread. September 11 or 9/11. Words that pour out with tears, pain and suffering.

In Israel, Europe, Asia - throughout the world many remember and reflect. Mostly from broadcast images we viewed from a plastic box we call TV. It is through this electronic box that we view both fiction and nonfiction. Where reality gets blurred with fantasy. But not for those who were in New York or Washington. Not for the relatives who lost loved ones on one of four hijacked aircraft which never arrived at their final destination.

In Israel, we think about Gaza and Disengagement. Last month the settlers were evacuated, this morning it is for the Israel Defense Forces to lower a blue and white flag for one final time.

Love all things surfing? Then blast off to Cocoa Beach, Fla.

I'm standing in the aisle of the main sales floor, watching a clerk restocking shell-covered jewelry boxes. She stops to help a customer looking for flamingo-themed wind chimes. They are temporarily out of stock this time of year -- they are a popular Christmas item -- but she promises to have them by week's end.

Not only will they get them in, there will probably be three or four models to choose from; clerk and customer know that if they could be found anywhere, this would be the place. As the sales person says, "Ron Jon speaks for itself."

New Jersey, 1959: Ron DiMenna has a developed and growing passion for surfing. He has tired of his homemade surfboards and wants to order his own custom California board. His father advises, "Buy three, sell two at a profit, then yours will be free."

He does just that, and in 1961, opens a little surf shop in Long Beach, N.J.
