On the Bright Side: Area man honored for mediation work

A Bainbridge man said Monday he is thrilled to be named the New York State Dispute Resolution Association's 2007 recipient of the Lawrence Cooke Peace Innovator Award.

Duke Fisher, 43, who co-founded Learning Laboratories with his wife, Sharon, will be honored at the Association's 2007 annual conference Oct. 19 in Albany.

"I've never done things traditionally," Fisher said. "Who would think that a goofball such as myself, who puts stickers on people's heads, would receive an award that has been given to (state) Supreme Court justices."

Each year, the award is bestowed to an individual or organization for providing innovative leadership in the alternative dispute-resolution field, according to an association media release.

"Mr. Fisher provides innovative mediation and conflict resolution training, team-building and communication training in New York state and beyond," the release said.

Altria's Split: Where There's Smoke…

With the global spotlight soon to bear down, Beijing has promised a smoke-free Olympics this summer. And earlier this month officials announced a citywide smoking ban in Beijing offices, hotels, and restaurants. So far, enforcement has been lax. "It will take time," says Hirohisa Shimura, a tobacco-industry analyst at UBS (UBS) in Tokyo. "Chinese people are well-known for their fondness for smoking. You can't change such national character easily."

Anti-tobacco activists know they face an uphill battle. "There are 350 million smokers in China—these people are not going to quit tomorrow," says Stella Bialous, a consultant to the World Health Organization. But, she adds, it's "huge progress for China even to discuss it."

EU and Asean urge Myanmar to free detainees

We welcome the decision of the government of Myanmar to step up its engagement with the U.N. and to enter into a dialogue with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, recalling that such a dialogue should be conducted with all concerned parties and ethnic groups,' said the joint declaration of the Asean-EU Summit.

The joint declaration also said the two groupings would be mindful of the different levels of development and capacity in moving towards a free trade deal.

Talks over a free trade agreement kicked off in May but have made little progress since then.

While EU officials and diplomats welcomed a new Asean charter - which enshrines principles of democracy and human rights, economic integration and environmental protection - they criticised the organisation's handling of military-ruled Myanmar.

'Incredible' gap to fill, says Haddin

When you go on tours, batsmen and bowlers can talk shop with each other, but it can be pretty lonely for keepers," he said. "The few opportunities we've had to tour together have been great, and we've spent quite a lot of time talking shop.

"It has also been great to see first-hand the way he goes about his business.

"The standards he has set with the gloves and even more with the bat have been incredible. Everyone has had to lift their game, and that says plenty about the kind of mark he's made on the game."

Haddin's phone has been inundated with messages since Gilchrist announced his retirement from Test cricket on Saturday. However, the NSW gloveman has been reluctant to talk about the situation until he has received an indication from national selectors as to their intentions.

Epic Movie (D)

Crispin Glover alert! With the flimsiest of story lines, this spoof is more spliced-together mimicry. It was directed and written by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, who were among the "brains" behind the similar "Scary Movie" franchise and 2006's "Date Movie." One rapidly begins to miss the truly inspired slapstick of "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun," which knew to leave their source material in the dust. PG-13; 86 min.

Century Downtown 12:10, 2:30, 4:55, 7:15, 9:55

She set out as she had done every Sunday afternoon for years. She locked her door, turned to the weather, and held the hand rail as she stepped carefully down from the porch. Once on the ground she adjusted her hat on her gray head. As this was a winter day in the Christmas season, a cold day, she also adjusted her coat. Had it been raining, she would have pulled a large lawn and leaf bag, as if it were a poncho, over her head and upper body. Most times she shouldered her hand bag. This day she also shouldered a bulging plastic shopping bag. She walked along the dirt road that would lead her to the paved road that would lead her to the highway. Her only company was her shadow, small and indistinct at her feet. She walked without the deliberate care of someone unfamiliar with the terrain, but neither was her gait quick.
