| Funeral Scam Warning
After the family pays that, the scam artist asks for more money. Since the money is wired to Atlanta, the Better Business Bureau believes the scam may surface here in Columbus. This as funeral directors say there are ways to protect yourself. "Ask them what company they represent and do they have a toll free number, " said funeral director John Sconiers, "if they don't have a toll free number, thats a red flag right there." Another way thieves target mourners is when they're at the cemetery or funeral home. While the family is attending the service, thieves break into their home and burglarize it. Barbara Starr has experienced loss in her lifetime, but she doesn't let her home become a target for thieves. "What we usually do is try and have somebody stay at the house where the funeral is going on and just be there to protect the house, " Starr said.

Man died calling triple-0 from burning home
He said it appeared the fire had started in the front bedroom. A police spokesman said investigators believed the fire was started by a discarded cigarette butt. They have ruled out any suspicious circumstances. Metropolitan Fire Brigade northern region operations commander Ian Yates said the man lived on his own, there were no smoke detectors in the house, it was full of old boxes and the front door was deadlocked. He urged people not to deadlock their doors while at home. "We would like people to take notice of this and ensure that if they're going to have deadlocks, leave the key in the deadlock. You must be able to get out of the house as well as prevent people getting in, and have a properly operating smoke detector," he said. "Our fire crews found the back door open ... but fire is a very funny thing and if the fire and the smoke was strong in the back of the house he would not have been able to get out via the back door." The man's dog, a seven-year-old brown kelpie named Bill, escaped through the back door and is now being cared for at the Lost Dog's Home.
Heart And Stroke Death Rates Steadily Decline; Risks Still Too High
ScienceDaily (Jan. 24, 2008) In an appropriate prelude to American Heart Month, which is just ahead in February, new mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that, since 1999, coronary heart disease and stroke age-adjusted death rates are down by 25.8 percent and 24.4 percent, respectively. This means that the American Heart Association's 2010 strategic goal for reducing deaths from coronary heart disease has been achieved, and for stroke nearly achieved -- ahead of time. However, potential problems loom for the future, as all of the major risk factors for these leading causes of death are still too high and several are actually on the rise. If this trend continues, death rates could begin to rise again in years ahead. .
