| No snow doesn’t mean no visitors
Wading through a sea of shoppers in downtown Truckee Friday, it was clear it didnt take snow to bring visitors to the Sierra Nevada over the Thanksgiving holiday. The long weekend brought a robust tide of visitors to Tahoe-Truckee lodging and to local retail shops for the important Black Friday that kicks off the holiday shopping season. Its a very big deal and were off to a roaring start, said Stefanie Olivieri, president of the Truckee Downtown Merchants Association on Friday. While the charm of a snow-covered town can help, Olivieri said visitors tend to come regardless of the weather. Andy Chapman, director of tourism for the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, agreed that Tahoes appeal transcends the weather. Folks come regardless of the recreation opportunities like skiing, Chapman said.

Forget about high-def TVs, the latest digital cameras or MP3 players. The device you need to make in order to make lots of money, especially at conventions like CES, is the personal transporter. With an expected 140,000 people expected at this week's show, getting to and from different locations within the convention center has provided for an interesting logistical nightmare. Already I've missed two appointments, mainly because the bus driver taking me to the convention center got lost and ended up going in the opposite direction. I'd be willing to donate myself for experiments in teleportation if it meant I could get to the next appointment on time. .
Atlanta firm to build retail at Ross Bridge
Daniel Corp.'s co-developer in a $2 billion project in Atlanta's Midtown Mile recently bought 16 acres across from Hoover's Ross Bridge neighborhood to build a shopping center. Atlanta-based Selig Enterprises Inc. recently purchased the land across the street from Ross Bridge's commercial Village Center for $3.5 million with the intention of developing a shopping center. The company plans to build two outparcels, which would include a drug store, a bank and a grocery-anchored center, all totaling 80,000 square feet, said Bob Riddle, executive vice president at Selig. Riddle said Selig is "talking" with grocery and drug stores and a bank, but declined to reveal which ones and how soon leases would be signed. .

Is a "discriminatory bias" being promoted when a high school chooses a homecoming king and queen or when a teacher discusses the role of a mother and father after reading a classic English novel?Education Code section 220 prohibits discrimination based upon a person's self-defined gender in "any program or activity conducted by an educational institution." And Education Code section 200 requires "equal rights and opportunities in the educational institutions of the state."If the school must treat a biological male as a self-defined "female" in "any program or activity" and in the "educational institutions of the state," does this require schools to allow the self-defined "female" to access female facilities? If persons can legally self-define their sex, shouldn't they be entitled to be treated that way regarding access to all public facilities? Sound outlandish? Not really. The Los Angeles Unified School District has already adopted policies allowing boys to use girls' restrooms and locker rooms ---- and vice versa! You can read LAUSD's Reference Guide 1557 on the district's Web site.It even tells teachers they need to refer to students using the student's preferred pronoun.
