Hardware HD DVD Player to Break $100 Mark on Friday

The third-generation Toshiba HD-A3 will also be soon selling at $169.99 at Sears during its Black Friday sale, according to blackfriday.info. The player currently sells for $299.99. Although Blu-ray Disc software is outselling that of HD DVD, the hardware entry price point is clearly in HD DVD's favor. Retailers sensitive to the pricing of its electronics products appear to be siding with the lower cost of HD DVD machinery. Wal-Mart was one of the first retailers to reveal its plans to carry Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD player at $198. Just days after Wal-Mart's reveal, Circuit City and Amazon.com priced the HD-A2 on their respective websites for $197.99.Also notable in Wal-Mart's Friday ad is the Sanyo 50-inch plasma HDTV, which will fit nicely as this holiday's most wanted gift. Those looking to jump straight into high-definition content will find quite the bargain with Wal-Mart's TV and HD DVD player combo at the end of this week.

Furnaces, Space Heaters, Fireplaces Can Pose Health Risks

Space heaters can cause fires if they are placed too close to flammable materials such as drapes, furniture or bedding. Fireplaces can cause fires if the chimney is cracked, blocked or coated with creosote, or if sparks and embers reach flammable materials. Fuel-burning appliances can cause carbon monoxide poisoning if they are improperly installed, poorly maintained, have defective or blocked venting systems, or are misused. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Marion County Health Department offer these tips to ensure all Indianapolis residents remain safe while staying warm.Space heater tips:* Place the heater on a level, hard and nonflammable surface (such as ceramic tile floor), not on rugs or carpets or near bedding or drapes. Keep the heater at least three feet from bedding, drapes, furniture and other flammable materials.

Pupil hit in head by scissors

A 13-YEAR-OLD girl had a pair of scissors "stuck in the back of her head" after an incident at a school in Orpington this morning.

Police were called to Priory School in Tintagel Road at 10.50am after the incident during an humanities lesson.

A sixth-form girl, 17, said: "A boy and girl were having an argument, the girl threw a paper ball at the boy and the boy threw scissors back and they stuck in the back of her head."

A 17-year-old boy, another sixth-former at the school, added: "One of the teachers said 'Are you alright?' and she couldn't speak.

"She got in the ambulance and there were scissors in the back of her head and you could only see the handle."

The girl was taken to the Princess Royal University Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

There is still faith in the region's market for new housing: Builder ...

S & A Homes of State College is seeking approvals for more townhouses at Kingswood in Guilford Township, despite the downturn in the housing market.

"We really like the Chambersburg market," said Chris Schoonmaker, vice president of sales for S & A Homes. "We've been there a long time. Even though the market is down, we want to have our ducks in a row when the market comes back."

S & A Homes is asking township supervisors for a conditional use to build 28 townhouses for the elderly on five acres of the 40-acre development between Wal-Mart and Garman Drive.

The move comes at a time when housing starts in the township have slipped to the level of 1982. Thirty-seven homes were constructed in Guilford in 2007, the lowest since 1982, when 32 homes were built.

"Compared to our 'boom' year of 2004, new home construction in 2007 was down 70 percent," Guilford Supervisor Greg Cook said.

Unique Connecticut town divided between Patriots, Giants

WATERBURY, Conn. - High above this southern Connecticut city sits a tended but rarely visited landmark.

A giant cross is visible for miles, given good weather, and longtime Waterbury residents instantly recognize it as part of a larger landscape. It is the simplest marker of Holy Land USA, a stunning stone replica of Jerusalem constructed in the 1950s.

The once-popular tourist attraction has been closed since 1984, but the desolate ice-and-snow covered attraction, with its Hollywood-like sign and cross, is an unintentional but apt metaphor for this blue-collar northeastern city for one more week.

Greg Williams 'Hammers' The Ticket

On Friday, October 12, the most popular sports talk radio show in the history of Dallas prepared for a routine remote broadcast at Addison's Blackfin Pub. KTCK-1310 AM The Ticket afternoon co-host Mike Rhyner arrived on time. Longtime sidekick Greg Williams, however, was alarmingly tardy.

Williams—"The Hammer" to a legion of loony fans that consistently makes the irreverent guy-talk station No. 1 in the market—finally appeared, albeit noticeably fidgety and audibly discombobulated. And then, just one segment into the four-hour show, he abruptly up and left.

No one's sure where Williams had been. But now we know where he was headed—down a dangerous, dark detour toward self-destruction. One that, according to multiple sources, ultimately landed him in rehab for a cocaine problem.
