| PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2008
John McCain went up from 21 percent in pre-Christmas December polls to 32 percent in polls taken between Christmastime and the Iowa caucuses January 3. Mitt Romney fell from 32 to 27 percent, and Rudy Giuliani fell from 16 to 10 in the same period. No one except for Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg conducted any New Hampshire interviews from December 21 to 26. The answer came to me as I was speaking at a luncheon panel on the Middle East and U.S. politics at the Washington Institute for Near East Studies. Someone in the audience asked what effect a terrorist incident would have. Peter Beinart, formerly editor of the New Republic and now at the Council on Foreign Relations, said that the assassination of Benazir Bhutto had little effect, since Mike Huckabee, the candidate with the least experience in foreign policy, won the Iowa caucuses.
Terror gear 'found at man's house'
Details of a haul of terrorist equipment found at the home of an Islamist fanatic who plotted to kill a British soldier have been revealed. After Parviz Khan, 37, was arrested at his house in Alum Rock, Birmingham, police found a wealth of items in rooms throughout the property which was ready to be shipped to Pakistan, Leicester Crown Court was told. In the hallway and living room, officers found signal detectors, binoculars, a hunting catalogue, heavy duty rubber gloves and a variety of torches. A Sony camcorder, allegedly ordered by Khan's terrorist contacts in Pakistan to film their attacks on coalition forces, was also found. Police found five packs of marksman kneepads in kitchen cupboards. On the floor of the bathroom, they discovered a camping gas stove.
Victory, Glorypark play different positions in Dallas-Fort Worth
Victory Park has given a big boost to Dallas' center city with its luxury residences, W Hotel and exclusive retail stores. Glorypark in Arlington may do even more for the suburbs. Victory Park and Glorypark are near sports venues, and Dallas investor Tom Hicks is involved in both. At first glance, they even look alike in drawings. The Glorypark complex south of Interstate 30 is planned as one of the country's most ambitious sports-anchored developments. The combination of shopping and entertainment, hotels, housing and office space is expected to cost more than $1 billion to build. But Glorypark's developers – Hicks Holdings and Ohio-based Steiner + Associates – want their 70-acre project to have an even wider appeal than Victory Park.
Editorial: Warnings don’t help economy (Jan. 23)
We will probably see an increase in inflation and a decrease in the social security trust fund, because Reid & Pelosi want to raid it to give people who pay no income tax a handout. Orguy, our glorious leaders may not be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, but they're pretty adept at taking money out of one pocket and putting it into another while smiling at a TV camera. Persuading commuters to carpool up Interstate 95 is not a problem in North Stafford. Workers want to rideshare--catch a van, bus or form instant carpools in slug lines. After all, these alternatives save money, help the environment and offer a break from the stress of driving. But the region is running out of places for people to park at some of the eight Interstate 95 commuter lots between Caroline County and North Stafford. The two Park & Ride lots near Garrisonville are overflowing, according to state and local surveys of commuter spaces. "Parking is just a horrendous problem," said Mark Dudenhefer, a Stafford supervisor who's been trying to expand commuter lots along State Route 610. Some solutions are on the horizon: LEASING SOME LOTS First, there is $150,000 in federal money available to lease parking spaces in North Stafford.

New Credit Card Directs Rebates Toward Tuition
The state treasurer's office Wednesday announced a new component to the Bright Start College Savings Program, which allows families to save for college tuition whenever they go shopping. The new Bright Start Futuretrust MasterCard contributes a 1 percent cash rebate on the amount of every purchase to each card members Bright Start College Savings Program account, according to a release from state treasurer Alexi Giannoulias's office. This is like a frequent-flyer program geared toward families saving for college, Giannoulias said. Families can use the cash rewards they earn from the program as another source of college money without changing their spending habits." .
