| Just Plain Neighbors: Historical society record gives glimpse of life ...
Many readers tell me they like the columns about the past in Franklin County. All right, here goes another one: In 1909 Darwin Barnard of Boston, a native of Shelburne, spoke to the Greenfield Historical Society. He told about Franklin County 50 years before that, in other words, in 1859. It is very long and I'll just include some excerpts. Barnard, in remembering his school days at the Greenfield school downtown, mentions a Mrs. Wendell Davis, who, in the days before May 1, went to the school ''voluntarily,'' to arrange for a picnic for the children on that day. ''The weather was fine and a large part of the school went to Petty's Plain to gather May flowers. Upon our return, we paraded through Main Street to Washington Hall (the town hall where the Veterans Memorial Mall is today) where Mrs.

Burns replaces Burns in US post
US President George W. Bush moved quickly to fill a crucial diplomatic post with responsibility for Iran policy and nominated the US ambassador to Russia for the job immediately after his predecessor's resignation. Bush tapped William Burns on Friday less than three hours after the State Department's third highest-ranking official, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns, announced he was joining a growing exodus of senior diplomats stepping down. The unusually speedy decision is a sign of the importance the Bush administration attaches to containing Iran. "President Bush has every confidence that Ambassador Burns will approach his new duties with the same energy that he has demonstrated in Moscow and throughout his long and effective diplomatic career," the White House said in a statement that thanked Nicholas Burns for his years of service.
Reports vary on cause of diplomat's death
US officials were attempting last night to transport the body of diplomat Keith Ryan from Islamabad to the United States for an autopsy, amid unconfirmed and contradictory news reports in Pakistan that he died in a murder, rather than a suicide. "I'm a little bit confused and upset," said Bob Ryan, Keith Ryan's father and a sports columnist for the Globe. "I want to make sure the plane takes off with the body." At least one news organization has reported that doctors at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences planned to perform their own autopsy. But Bob Ryan has been assured by US officials, including Representative Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts and a ranking official of the US Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, that his son's body would be flown out of Pakistan before an autopsy could be performed.
January 2008
Well, you'd better be. Tom Sherry and the other giddy Spokane snowcasters are calling for three more days of significant snow this week. We'll probably be talking more about snow loads on the roof as the week progresses. For now, I'm content that the plows came by at 1:30 p.m. today, about 26 hours after the snow started falling. I have 4WD, so it wasn't a big deal. I was able to fish-tale onto the main arterials. We'll digest tonight's snow dump in the morning. Until then, here's your Wild Card ... .
