Wal-Mart gets nod in Suisun

Although their decision is only advisory, the Suisun City Planning Commission unanimously voted Tuesday night in favor of a proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter.

The commissioners voted 7-0 that they were satisfied that the environmental documents associated with the proposed store on Walters Road near Highway 12 sufficiently addressed any concerns they had.

The City of Suisun City Council now will consider the issue in a meeting set for Feb. 12. That meeting will decide whether or not the council will override a decision by the Solano County Airport Land Use Commission, also advisory, which voted against the project.

The council would need an approval vote of at least 4-1, for four-fifths, to override the land-use group's decision. Because of this aspect, Suisun City Attorney Sky Woodruff explained, the planners' decision would be only advisory.

West Salem High seniors work hard to prepare for the future

Jevning, a part-time cashier at Reader's Guide, and Nicodemus, who is on the sales team at the local Great Harvest Bread Co., are saving the bulk of their earnings for a future at a four-year university.

But it's not just cash that they are taking from this experience.

"My job is helping me grow the characteristics I want to portray when I go off to college," said Nicodemus. "A positive attitude, a hard-working spirit, patience, self-control and a constant passion for whatever events are present in my life."

Jevning agrees. "All the work experience I have has helped me to develop a strong work ethic, as well as public relation skills," she said. "When you have a job, it gives you some appreciation for the difference between needs and wants. I now have a greater appreciation for all the things my parents have bought me and the money they have spent on me through the years."

Students at West Salem High are encouraged to follow these girls' example in preparation for their futures.
