Emerson's friends recall 'that big heart of hers'

The day before she set out for her fateful hike, Meredith Emerson added another trifle to her Amazon.com wish list. This electronic keyhole to modern life gives hints of the 24-year-old's myriad interests. A "Harry Potter" book translated into French. A set of "Sex and the City" videos. A treatise on the power of Christianity. The ideas offered to those shopping for her came with this thoughtful tip: "If you want to buy me a book and can find a used one in good condition, more power to you! Save the money and the tree."

As she typed away, adding some environmentally friendly power strips for her computer gear, she sat in the Spartan apartment she shared with a friend from the University of Georgia. The distinguishing features of the place were all about Emerson, said Julia Karrenbauer, her roommate in the Buford apartment.

Strike leads TV hound to land of obscurity

It was only a matter of time.

She has more money than God, does charity work and easily turns any book into a best-seller.

So the recent announcement that Oprah Winfrey will get her own TV network should come as no surprise.

OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network, to make its debut in 2009, will "celebrate life." (Sorry, no news about potential new-car giveaways.)

Oprah, after all, is responsible for her own interest group: Slightly more people -- about 6 million -- regularly watch her daytime show than watched the ABC college football games on Saturday night in the fall. (And we're talking football -- at night.)

Besides, if HBO can fill 14 channels (I don't even know what HBO Zone is), shouldn't Oprah have at least one?

Her network probably won't present the "niche-iest" programming on television.

WENDY HIT BY NEW REVELATIONS

THE SECRET list of donors that showed Wendy Alexander's team knew four weeks ago about a legally suspect donation from a Jersey tycoon was sent directly from the Labour leader's office.

The Sunday Herald understands the list of fundraisers was circulated by her office using the parliamentary email system - a link that ties Alexander to the document.

It also suggests the Labour leader's campaign was using MSP facilities for party fundraising purposes - an activity that is explicitly against Holyrood rules.

Ramtha school takes on teacher

You have to put people on notice about what's copyrighted and what's not, but they didn't," Swanson said. "It's not a copyright case, which is what it should be.

"The case raises some interesting and novel legal issues," he said.

The case centers on the testimony of Chelsea Spooner, a Ramtha school student for14 years. Spooner testified in a written declaration that she attended Weaver's five-day, $625 workshop, "An Equation for a Great Life: Health, Wealth and Wisdom," from Aug. 2-6, 2006, at the request of Ramtha school spokesman Mike Wright.

Spooner said Weaver's workshop contained terms that were "unmistakably used in RSE teachings."

Spooner also noted in court documents that Weaver taught basic elements of a classic Ramtha school technique.

In it, several hundred Ramtha students walk or run across a field while blindfolded.

Shoots Bear, Submits to Husband

She quit college after a year to help support him, and was working as a dental assistant when she started having severe back pain at age 20. "Everybody thought it was a slipped disc," Caldwell recalls, but it was spinal cancer—and required treatment that doctors warned her might leave her unable to walk or bear children.

In his book Character Makes a Difference, Huckabee describes his wife as handier than he is—at changing a tire, for instance—as well as physically tougher and braver: "I will take non-physical risks, such as running for office or taking a job that may not work out; Janet will take physical risks—climbing cliffs, parasailing, racing cars or stalking bears." She also went back to college in her 40s and, when her husband isn't running for president, works for the American Red Cross.

Corrections and clarifications

That amount is nearly 13 times higher than a year earlier. M&I also said it could write off up to $195 million in bad debt in the quarter, compared with $15 million a year earlier.

An item Saturday in the Religion Briefing misstated the address of St. Francis Chapel at the motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Francis Assisi, where Bishop William Callahan will preside at a liturgy at 9 a.m. Jan. 6. It is at 3221 S. Lake Drive, not 1501 S. Layton Blvd. The Milwaukee Archdiocese provided incorrect information.

An item in the Regional News Watch on Nov. 3 transposed the names of a man charged with reckless homicide and the victim. It was William G. Stone, not Marvin G. Wise, who faced fines and prison terms after being charged. Wise was the victim.
